Fishy

معنی: عجیب، مشکوک

 

When the security guard saw a light in the store, it seemed to him that there was something fishy going on. He called the central office and explained to his superior that he thought something  strange and suspicious was occurring.

وقتی نگهبان نوری را در مغازه مشاهده کرد، به نظرش رسید که چیز مشکوکی در حال اتفاق افتادن بود. او با دفتر مرکزی تماس گرفت و به مافوقش گفت که به گمان او چیز عجیب و مشکوکی در حال وقوع بود.

speak up- بلند تر صحبت کردن

اصطلاحات روزمره Copy

۱- ماها معمولا به هر کارتی که امکان خرید با اونو داشته باشیم میگیم: credit card

اما باید بدونین که معمولا به کارت های بانکی دیگه credit card نمی گن و به جاش از عبارت cash card استفاده می کنند.

پس:

کارت های بانکی: cash card

کارت های اعتباری مثل credit card : visa card , master card , American express

2- اگه از بیننده های فیلم های پلیسی مثل سریال ۲۴ یا سری بازی های call of duty باشین حتما متوجه شدین که بعد از تموم شدن مکالمه با بیسیم ، این عبارتو به کار میبرن: copy that

Copy تو مکالمات بیسیم (رادیویی) به معنیه “دریافت کامل و واضح سیگنال ارسالی” ـه. پس ?do you copy یعنی “شنیدی؟” ، “دریافت شد؟” ، “مفهومه؟” . و عبارت copy that یعنی “سیگنال دریافت شد” ، “فهمیدم” ، “مفهومه”.

.Pilot: sir, we’re about to drop nuclear payload. What’s the order? Over

.HQ: negative, you got to return to base immediately. We’ve got a sandstorm headed your way

?Repeat, that’s a negative, return to base immediately. Do you copy

Pilot: copy that HQ. Returning to base

- خلبان : قربان داریم بمب اتمی رو پرتاب می کنیم. دستور چیه؟ تمام.

- مرکز فرماندهی :(پاسخ) منفیه. هرچه سریع ترین به پایگاه برگردین. ما متوجه حرکت یه طوفان شن در مسیر شما شدیم.

 تکرار میشه، پاسخ منفیه. هرچه سریع تر برگردین به پایگاه. دریافت شد؟

- خلبان : مرکز دریافت شد.داریم برمی گردیم

نکته : HQ مخفف Headquarters ـه.

اصطلاحات روزمره Sitting

تو یکی از فیلما مترجم take a seat رو معنی کرده بود: “بگیر بشین”

خب در حالت کلی معنیه درستیه اما باید به این نکته دقت داشته باشین که take a seat یه عبارت formal و مودبانه اس در حالی که “بگیر بشین” تو فارسی یه عبارت informal ـه و حتی گاهی بار منفی داره. شاید بگین که چه فرقی داره “بگیر بشین” ترجمه شه یا هرچیز دیگه ای ، مهم اینه که اون مفهوم رو میرسونه. خب این درست ولی تو کشور ما خیلیا هستن که انگلیسی رو از طریق دیدن فیلم با زیرنویس فارسی یاد میگیرن و وقتی تو اون حالت take a seat رو با “بگیر بشین” تو ذهنشون نگه میدارن و اگه فردی تو یه موقعیت واقعی informal باشه و با همون دید از take a seat استفاده کنه شاید چندان خوب نباشه.

پس از take a seat یا have a seat برای اینکه محترمانه به کسی بگیم که بشینه استفاده می کنیم. تو حالت عادی هم از sit یا sit down (تلفظ شه سیداون نه سیت داون!) استفاده میشه. تو حالت خیلی خودمونی تر و دوستانه میتونین از اصطلاح “park yourself” و یا از شکل جم و جور ترش یعنی از ” park it ” استفاده کنین.

ضمنا بد نیست اینم بدونین که اگه وارد یه مکانی شدین و عده ای به احترام شما از جاشون بلند شدن ، می تونین از be seated, please یعنی ” خواهش می کنم بفرمائید (بشینید)” استفاده کنین.

a fruitcake- really strange crazy, a kind of serious word. She's a fruitcake
going bananas- becoming crazy, especially with too much to do. I'm going bananas
nut/ nutty- funny kind of crazy, usually makes you laugh. He's a nut. or He's nutty
a tough cookie- a tough or strong person, or doesn't show his emotions easily. That man is a tough cookie
sugar and spice- very sweet, nice, or kind, feminine, (used for girls.) Her daughter is sugar and spice

We probably use red to describe anger because people’s faces turn red when they are angry. Imagine you became so angry your eyes became red, too. Then you might begin to “see red.”


. Green with envy= wanting something someone else has

I’m not sure why people are green when they are envious, but this is a very common saying.

. To feel blue= sad


You can also “be blue.”

. Yellow bellied= coward, not brave


Belly means stomach. If your belly is yellow, you are not brave. This idiom isn’t used as much nowadays as it was in the past.

. Tickled pink= very happy


When someone is tickled, he feels very excited and happy. Perhaps your skin becomes pink when you feel happy.

Idioms using words for weather

raining cats and dogs- raining very hard. Wow! Look outside. It's raining cats and dogs.

to be full of hot air- a person who talks a lot and says things that aren't completely true. He's always talking about how he is going to find gold in the river. I don't believe him. I think he's full of hot air.

when it rains it pours- nothing happens and then everything happens. Nobody ever visits my house and then 10 people come. When it rains, it pours.

sunny (as an adjective)- happy or pleasant. The new office girl has a very sunny personality.

a breeze- easy. That test was a breeze.

a fair-weathered friend- a person who is only your friend when everything is good

under the weather- feeling bad. Joan felt under the weather after she failed her history exam

cloud nine- wonderful place or feeling. After I got my dream job I was on cloud nine

weather the storm- survive during difficult times. Even though my father lost his job, we were able to weather the storm. Now everything is better

  see eye to eye- agree. Joan and Grant see eye to eye on spiders. They both hate them.
put one's foot in one's mouth- to say something embarrassing and then realize it was bad. I said Frank was ugly and then I realized he heard me. I really put my foot in my mouth.
stay on one's toes- be ready/ prepared for something. Firefighters have to stay on their toes. They may have to fight a fire at anytime.
keep an eye on- watch something to make sure it is okay. Could you keep an eye on the baby while I go to the store?
lend/give someone a hand- to help with something. That box looks heavy. Let me give you a hand.
be in over one's head- be in a situation that is very difficult. Alan was really in over his head when he started studying advanced chemistry. It was so hard for him.
keep one's fingers crossed- to hope that something good will happen. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I will get that job.
get cold feet- get nervous, especially before marriage. The night before the wedding Alex got cold feet. He wondered if he should really get married.
have one's heart set on something- really want something. My son Tommy really has his heart set on that new bicycle. Maybe I will buy it for his birthday.

two's company, three's a crowd- two people together are good, but three people together cause problems. I don't want to go to the movies with you and your boyfriend. Two's company and three's a crowd.

forty winks- a short nap (sleep). I'm so sleepy. I think I will have forty winks before I go shopping.

dressed to the nines- dressed very nicely. When Hillary went to the dance, she was dressed to the nines.

the one and only- something unique, there is only one of something. I want to introduce you to the one and only Tom Cruise


six to one, half a dozen to the other- (a dozen means twelve) it doesn't matter, 6 is the same as half a dozen. Do you want chocolate or vanilla ice cream? It doesn't matter, it's six to one, half a dozen to the other.
